  • “Oooo gross” were cries of children as they stirred tiny brew pots of a liquid, green, slippery substance known as slime. “Slime is awesome,” one child said as he squished a plastic bag containing his green slime with his fingers. “I think it looks like green brains,” another child said. The theme for the McPherson Public Library’s weekly Beyond the Book this Tuesday was Gross Out. The weekly program is for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. The “slime” was made from water, glue, Borax and green food coloring. The children began their hour of all things disgusting by being read “Track that Scat,” which is a book about how people use animal droppings and footprints to track animals. The group also looked at pictures of items that looked gross when magnified, including a toothbrush and buttered toast. “We hope they will learn about topics here and want to find out more about them and will seek more information upstairs,” Wilson said. There are two more Beyond the Book afterschool programs this month. On Oct. 23, children will have a session on Legos. On Oct. 30, children will watch a Scooby Doo movie. Sessions in November include “All About Food,” a games session and another session on Legos. Beyond the Book sessions are 4 to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays. Admission is free. Children can register at the children’s desk at the library.
