A nervous McPherson High School crowd held their breath as the Bullpups battled Topeka Hayden in the Class 4A State Volleyball championship match Saturday at the Salina Bicentennial Center.
The roar that followed the final play, a picture-perfect pass from Abby Pedersen to Moira Pyle, who would then set up Paige Regnier for the spike, would send MHS in to the history books.
The 2-1 win by scores of 22-25, 25-22 and 25-23 over Hayden Saturday marked the first time McPherson High School won a state volleyball championship. Senior Katelyn Loecker said it felt absolutely amazing to bring home that first banner.
"I'm so proud of all the girls on this team," Loecker said. "I knew we could do it, and they just had to believe in themselves, too."
After MHS dropped the first game in the championship match, senior Briana Pontious said the nerves set in.
"It was crazy," Pontious said. "I was shaking and just hoping that my team would pull it together and get that championship that we wanted."
The Bullpups end their season at 42-5. Tashley Snyder joins Loecker and Pontious as the team's departing seniors, though nine return to next year's squad.
