Jack R. Vetter, 91, of McPherson, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at the Cedars Health Care Center in McPherson.
Jack was born on Oct. 30, 1920, in Kansas City, Mo., a son of the late Lena (Robbins) and Herbert Vetter.
Jack attended and graduated in 1938 from Paseo High School in Kansas City, Mo. He attended and graduated in 1942 from McPherson College, McPherson. He was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers professional football team and played one season prior to entering into the Marine Corps as an aviator. Captain Vetter served in the US Marines during World War II and the Korean War.
He was an Insurance Loss Prevention Representative at Farmers Alliance and St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance for 25 years. In retirement he worked for Precision Chrome, McPherson, as a driver.
He was a member of Countryside Covenant Church McPherson.
He enjoyed golfing, reading, gardening, snow skiing, music and coffee with friends.
He was the husband of Charlotte A. (Ortlund) Vetter. On March 27, 1944, they were married at Memphis, Tenn.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte of McPherson; his daughter, Marcia Ecker, and husband, Ted, of South Barrington, Ill.; his son, Chuck Vetter, and wife, Taryn, of McPherson; eight grandchildren; Jack Ecker, Kira Johnson, Benj Ecker, Jon Ecker, Chuck Vetter, Sam Vetter, Johanna Vetter, and Nelson Vetter; seven great-grandchildren, Maeve and Nat Johnson, Amelia and Elijah Ecker, Axel and Charlotte Ecker; Scarlett Ecker; other relatives and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Jack Jr. and Steven, and two sisters, Frances Moore and Mae LaVon Waring.
Friends are invited to call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at Countryside Covenant Church, McPherson.
The graveside service will precede the memorial service at 9:30 a.m. at McPherson Cemetery in McPherson. Full military honors will be presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2715 and American Legion Post No. 24, both of McPherson.
The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at Countryside Covenant Church, McPherson, with Reverend Jon Black and Reverend Benjamin Ecker officiating.
