  • The McPherson High School boy’s soccer team now knows who they will face in the semifinals of the Class 4-1A State Tournament, and the road doesn’t get any easier. Head Coach Chris Adrian’s Bullpups (17-2) will take the field at Kansas City-Piper High School at 7 p.m. Friday against Tonganoxie (15-3-1), who advanced after a 2-1 win over DeSoto in Tuesday’s quarterfinals. Adrian said he sees a bit of a mirror image when he looks at the Chieftans. “They’re very much a balanced team,” Adrian said. “They’re not a team where we can just shut down one guy. They get a lot of production from a lot of different players.” In particular, Adrian is keeping an eye on sophomore Asher Huseman and senior Matthew Saathoff, the Chieftans leading scorer with 27 goals on the year. “It’s definitely going to be a step up from what we’ve seen so far,” Adrian said. The other half of the bracket features Topeka Hayden (18-1) taking on defending Class 4-1A champions Kansas City Christian in the 5 p.m. game. The Wildcats dominated DeSoto 4-0, while KCC squeaked by Baldwin on penalty kicks after regulation and the first overtime ended in a 1-1 tie. The consolation game starts at noon Saturday, with the championship match to start at 2 p.m., also at Kansas City-Piper High School. Adrian admitted he would have rather played in the 5 p.m. game as the Bullpups make the trip northeast to Kansas City on Friday. “Having those back-to-back games, in a game like soccer, is brutal,” Adrian said. “Everyone is giving everything they’ve got in that Friday game to get to the championship.” MHS returns to the semifinals for the first time since 2007, where it hosted the finals in the Class 5A tournament at McPherson Stadium. The Bullpups finished third in that tournament after falling to eventual champion St. Thomas Aquinas in the semis and then defeating Shawnee Heights in the consolation game.
