  • The McPherson City Commission gave its support Monday to a grant application that would allow McPherson residents to have better access to healthy food.
The McPherson County Community Foundation is applying for a grant from the Kansas Health Foundation.
The grant, which would be managed by the foundation, would be for $25,000 each year for three years.
The majority of funds would pay for a temporary worker to develop a plan to provide access to healthy food in McPherson, especially for young people. This individual would visit a community that has established successful healthy food access, develop a long-term team of community members and organize and implement a sustainable food plan locally.
This could include initiatives, such as community gardens, or partnerships with schools and restaurants.
The application is due Dec. 3, but the foundation will not know the results until mid-January.
The foundation applied for the grant last year but did not receive it. If the grant is awarded, implementation will begin about April.
“This is something the community needs,” Becky Goss, foundation director, said. “You can’t necessarily make families eat the way they should, but you can make it more accessible for them to make that choice.”
