  • Republican Clark Shultz of McPherson won reelection to his ninth term in the Kansas House Tuesday.
He defeated Democrat Pam Lawson 7,064 to 2,223 votes.
"It has been an honor to serve in the legislature, and I have tried to represent the values of McPherson County," he said. "Once again I am honored the electorate has returned me to continue to represent them, and I will do so the best way that I can."
As a senior representative, Shultz said he will be able to be a strong voice for McPherson County.
"McPherson County is well respected in part because of our industry," he said. "I try to vote for things that are right and things that are beneficial to our county and state."
Looking forward to the next session, Shultz said there is work to be done on taxes. He said the drastic tax cuts that were passed during the last session need to be revisited. If the tax cuts go into full effect, the state is expected to face a shortfall of millions.
Lawson said she knew she had an uphill battle running as a Democrat in a Republican state, and she had far fewer financial resources than the incumbent Shultz at her disposal.
Lawson said she will continue to serve on the McPherson school board and plans another run for the Kansas House in 2014.
"My contributions were grass roots from people who believed in me," she said. "I hope I can continue to build that army of people who believe in me in the next two years."
