Communication is key to maintaining those long-term lease agreements within the agriculture infrastructure. Why is it so important today? The likely answer is the lack of on-farm experience or connection many landowners have today in comparison to 50 years ago. At one time, most people were connected to the farm. Today, only 1 percent of the population are involved in farming. So as more farmland is owned by people without a farm background, it is natural that these landowners would not be as aware of what is happening on their farmland. Farming is a business dependent on business relationships and business agreements. It is advisable to work on building and improving those landlord relationships at least once a year. Just as we maintain our farm equipment in the fall, we need to maintain those agreements. Call or send a letter informing the landlord of how the growing season went. They are interested in the good and the bad. Ask if they have any concerns or questions that you can help them with. Take time to update any lease agreement that is more than two years old. Offer to convert any verbal lease agreements to written lease agreements when possible. Communication is the key to maintaining these agreements. K-State Extension will host a lease meeting on Nov. 28 at the 4-H Building in McPherson. The meeting will start at 9:30 a.m. and conclude about noon. There is no cost, but participants are asked to register by calling the McPherson County Extension Office at 620-241-1523. Topics will cover the “Basic Understanding of Kansas Lease Laws,” the “Basics of Natural Resource Leases” and a “Historical Look at Land Values.”
