Q: Describe your program currently being funded by United Way dollars.
A: United Way dollars help fund services provided by eight senior centers throughout McPherson County plus one senior serve coordinator in Roxbury.
Q: Who benefits from services provided by your organization?
A: McPherson County senior citizens benefit from a diversified service structure intended to strengthen their capability to remain in their own homes and respective communities while maintaining dignity and self determination. Senior centers are a local, trusted resource for assistance and advice on almost every challenge facing the older adult.
Q: What value does your program have to the community?
A: Many county seniors rely on their senior centers on a daily basis for meals, transportation, safety reassurance and fellowship. Many more take advantage of unique programs, services and events. These citizens support local businesses, volunteer their time and talents and boost the morale of those around them.
Q: What’s one of the biggest challenges your organization faces?
A: We are seeking effective ways of getting pertinent information to our senior citizens. Medicare is more difficult to understand, technology has added more confusion and more exploitation of our elders, and families are often not available to help the elders to adjust to a quickly changing world.
Q: If there’s one thing you would like the community to know about your organization, what would it be?
A: The many services senior centers offer help elders maintain independence and self determination when faced with disability, confusion, financial problems and loneliness. Having a senior center in one’s hometown — staffed and patronized by people the senior knows and trusts — can be a life saver. McPherson County Council on Aging is one of 22 programs currently funded by the United Way of McPherson County. Campaign efforts led by executive director Anne Kirchner include raising $225,000 to support future program endeavors. Donations can be sent to United Way of McPherson County, P.O.
