The 34th Annual Community Christmas Carol-Along promises to bring a night of Christmas music and a melody of many different classical instruments. The event will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at the McPherson Opera House. The event is a casual come-and-go event. The Carol-Along started 34 years ago in the main lobby of Home State Bank & Trust, and has since grown beyond into a traditional event for the community of McPherson. For Donna House, longtime director of the Community Carol-Along, it’s a constant opportunity to introduce the people of the community to great classical music of Christmas. “The whole idea was to familiarize people — to get them up close to classical instruments,” House said. This year the performance will take place on the stage of the Opera House, instead of the pit used last year. House mentioned the structure this year as a work in progress, and emphasized the importance of keeping an informal atmosphere for attendees. The event will begin with the McPherson Youth Pipes & Drums, followed by the McPherson Community Brass Choir. Vocal caroling and sing-along will begin at 6:30 p.m. Featured throughout the evening will be local music groups and individual musicians, including Central Christian College Concert Choir, Becky Snell, director, Brett Janssen, accompaniment; Sonshine Choir, Celaine Worden, director, accompaniment Alma Nigh; Bill Collier and Dick Nichols, piano duet; McPherson College Singers, Josh Norris, director; and Sweet Assurance, Nancy Jones, director. Song leaders are Candi Alexander, Mikael Andrewson, Sheila Billings, Micah Black, Don Hale, Laura Hale, Evan Herrera, Cindy Hutfles, GarJordan, Becky Newman, Baron Shively, Mary Lynn Smith, Joe Johnston and Donna House. The sing-along will be accompanied by a number of local musicians, including Bill Collier, Janie Dawson, Tom Hurst, Brett, Janssen, Donata Perry, Kaitlyn vanAsselt, Molly Black, Casey Gregory, Karen Holman, Kathy House and Julie Holloway If you have more questions about the Carol-Along, contact Donna House at 241-5654 or at 242-6090.
