The Kansas Basketball Coaches Association has released it’s preseason rankings ahead of the start of the high school basketball season Friday, and both Bullpup teams find themselves in the top 10.
Coach Chris Strathman’s girls, coming off a Class 4A state championship last season, are at the top of the heap in 4A, followed by Wamego, Holton, Hesston and Colby to round out the top five.
The MHS boys’ squad is ranked 10th in Class 4A, as coach Kurt Kinnamon brings back a number of experienced players from last year’s 18-6 team. Ottawa sits atop the 4A boys mountain, followed by Highland Park, Abilene, Coffeyville and KC Sumner.
Additionally, both Moundridge teams are ranked in Class 2A to start the season, as the boys sit at No. 8 in their poll, while the Lady Wildcats are ranked third on the girls’ side.
Sterling, Meade, Lyndon, Ness City and Berean Academy round out the top five in the boys Class 2A.
Jefferson County North is the top team in the girls 2A poll, with Washington County, Sterling and Ell-Saline completing the top five.
Blue Valley Northwest takes the top spot in the Class 6A boys rankings, followed by Olathe East, Blue Valley North and Olathe South.
Wichita Heights claimed the No. 1 rank on the girls side of 6A. Olathe Northwest, Maize Olathe South and Washburn Rural round out the 6A girls’ top five.
In Class 5A, Kapaun Mt. Carmel received the No. 1 rank in the boys poll and girls poll, though Salina Central clocked in at No. 2 on the girls’ side.
In the boys 5A poll, Emporia, Shawnee Mission South, Lansing and Leavenworth comprise the rest of the top five. For the girls, St. Thomas Aquinas, Mill Valley and Blue Valley round out the field.
Scott City and Hillsboro are the Class 3A boys and girls’ top seeds, respectively. In the boys’ poll, the top five is filled out by Beloit, Nemaha Valley, Hillsboro and Central Springs.
For the girls 3A rankings, Burlington, Garden Plain, Holcomb and Haven are the rest of the top five.
South Haven claimed the top spot in the Class 1A Div. I boys rankings, followed by Udall, St. John, Centralia and Pretty Prairie. Fowler was selected No. 1 in Div. II boys, along with Frankfort, Wallace County, Baileyville-B&B and Otis-Bison..
Olpe and Wilson were the girls Class 1A top seeds.
