  • McPherson High is one meet in, and already a swimmer has qualified for the state meet in February. The Bullpups’ Derick Goodson won both the 50-meter and the 500-meter freestyle at the Newton Invitational Tuesday, setting a new team record in the process in the 50-meter freestyle with a 22.69 second time. Goodson qualified for the state meet in both races with his performances, as the 50 freestyle carries a qualifying time of 30.94 seconds, while the 500-meter freestyle has a qualifying time of 5:34.81. “His goal this year is to qualify in all seven individual races,” coach Bonnie Sue Fisher said. Fisher added all six swimmers did a great job during the invite, which was won by Derby with 313 points. Junior Zane Richter made personal best times in the 200-meter individual medley and the 100-meter butterfly, finishing fifth in both races and just outside the state qualifying times of 2:55.87 and 1:20.05, respectively. Kyler Jost finished 12th place in the 50-meter freestyle, setting a new personal best time in the process. Freshman Spencer Steinert gave the Bullpups two more points by finishing 11th in the 500-meter freestyle. Additionally, Fisher praised first-year swimmers Ryen Trost and Russell Regehr, who both competed in their first invitational Tuesday. “Both boys swam faster than the goals that we had set for their races and learned a lot about what it takes to be a competitive swimmer,” Fisher said. “They are going to be very important legs of the 200-meter medley and the 200-meter free relays. I expect to see those relays hitting the state qualifying time within the next couple of meets.” Host Newton finished second in the invitational with 280 points, followed by Hutchinson (207) and Campus (173). Winfield (153) finished fifth, followed by McPherson (97) and El Dorado (65). Next up is the Maize Invitational Saturday afternoon against host Maize, Thomas More Prep, Rose Hill and Newton, among others. The invitational is slated to get under way at 1 p.m.
