Loretta Pierson, 96, of McPherson, Kan., died after a long life and a short illness at 5:10 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 29, while in the company of family members, at McPherson Hospital.
Loretta Pierson, 96, of McPherson, Kan., died after a long life and a short illness at 5:10 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 29, while in the company of family members, at McPherson Hospital. Loretta was born in Dalhart, Texas, on March 1, 1916, to Minnie Mariah (Hardy) and Olen Hardgrave, the fourth of their five daughters. Loretta attended the Waurika, Okla., schools through her freshman year when she moved to McPherson, a town she truly loved all her life. She graduated from McPherson High School in 1933. While attending Fort Hays College in Hays, she met and fell in love with the man of her dreams, Weir Pierson. Loretta Hardgrave was united in marriage to William Weir Pierson on Jan. 22, 1939, at Hays. Dr. Weir Pierson died on July 14, 2002. Loretta was a mother who never retired. She was a longtime member of Ladies Reading Circle and was a member of the First Congregational Church, McPherson. Loretta was unconcerned about belonging to a specific church because, as she often said, "I just want to belong to the Lord." Surviving family members include her children: Judy Talbott and husband Pete, of Santa Fe, N. M.; Merrily Pierson, of McPherson; Susan Redstone and husband Marty, of McPherson; Kristi Whorton and husband Allen, of Little River; and Tad Pierson, of Memphis, Tenn. The Talbott grandchidlren and their children: Blaine and Kate Talbott, William and Hannah; Megan Talbott and John Moench, Mary Ren, Bridget, and Bea; Catilin and Chris Tobin, Pierson and Garnet; Bevan and Darren Gacicia, Teddy and Grant. The Redstone grandchildren and their children: Travis and Mike Powers, Alisyn, Gillian, and Katelyn Martin, and Alyssa, Kalyn, and Megan Powers; Josh and Regan Redstone and Dexter and Rowan Loretta. The Whorton grandchildren and their children: Gunner and Traci Whorton, Jalyn, Emily, and Reesa; Tyler and Darsha Whorton, Zoey and Roary; Garrett and Maranda Whorton. Several nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Loretta was preceded in death by her parents, Olen and Minnie Hardgrave; her husband, Dr. Weir Pierson; her son, Tim Pierson; her sisters, Eura Mae Carlson, Ila Opal Zelgewicz, Ruby Lois Vollmer, and Mari OlaWeatherbee. Friends are invited to call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at Glidden- Ediger Chapel, McPherson. The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday Dec. 4 at New Hope Evangelical Church, McPherson, with Reverend Jim Keil and Reverend Ted Weis officiating. The final resting place will be at the McPherson Cemetery McPherson.
