  • BPU completes water main replacement

    • email print
  • The details The McPherson Board of Public Utilities has completed the replacement of a water main underneath Main Street from the downtown Railroad tracks to Olive Street. The $200,000 project replaces an aging 6-inch water main with an 8-inch line. No one at BPU quite knew how old the old pipe was, but Mark Wurm, BPU assistant general manager, said workers think the line was at least 50 years old. Wurm said the line was deteriorated to the point the utility would continue to have problems with the line failing. When a main fails, it buckles the pavement and requires crews to disrupt traffic in the area in order to dig up the line and repair it. “... and then you would still have an old main that is still weak,” Wurm said. All services have been transferred to the new main line. The old line has been abandoned and will soon be capped. The project was started in the last week of August and was recently completed with the exception of the capping of the old line, which should not require any further disruption of traffic on Main Street. Wurm said the project was fairly challenging based on its location and the requirement for the main to cross Main Street at the railroad tracks.
