The Lady Teutons opened up the 2012-2013 season with an impressive showing against Goessel (0-1), running over the Bluebirds 60-42.
Inman (1-0) trailed early, but coach Jeff Friesen said his team quickly worked through the first-game jitters and settled in, taking the lead back in the first quarter and never looking back.
“I felt like the girls played really well for the first game,” Friesen said. “Offensively, the girls ran the floor well and did a really nice job of looking for each other and sharing the ball.”
Inman’s Kaitlyn Goalden led all scorers with 14 points. Other Teutons in double digits included Abby Ropp with 11 and Naomi Williams with 13. Goessel’s Jessica Harvey was the lone Bluebird in double digits with 11 points.
Abilene 39, Smoky Valley 31
The Smoky Valley girls fell to Abilene 39-31 in Bill Nelson’s debut as the Vikings’ coach, but his team showed some grit in the loss.
The Vikings (0-1) found themselves down only five after the first quarter of play, but an poor second quarter left Smoky Valley facing a 23-9 halftime deficit.
The Vikings refused to roll over, however, and fought back to within five in the third quarter, before the Cowgirls (1-0) pulled away late in the fourth.
Hannah McBride led the Smoky Valley offensive output with 13 points. Clair Denk chipped in 6, while Maddie Klotzbach and Emily Norberg each added five.
Abilene freshman Belle Barbieri led all scorers with 14.
Moundridge 32, Little River 22
It was a low-scoring affair in Little River, as the Wildcats defeated Shane Cordell and the Redskins 32-22.
The Wildcats (1-0) took a 22-14 lead into the locker room at the half, and the Redskins just couldn’t get anything going in the third quarter, as they only mustered a single free throw after eight minutes of play.
One bright spot for Little River (0-1), however, was the play of Skyler Johnston, who led all scorers with 12 points on the evening. The next closest was Moundridge’s Brooke Holloway, who had eight points.
