The Moundridge girls were game, but a barren third quarter doomed the Lady Cats against Class 3A No. 1 Hillsboro in day one of the Moundridge Preseason Basketball Classic. Both teams had a slow start, as the first bucket didn’t come until nearly two minutes into the first quarter. Moundridge’s defense made Hillsboro fight for every point, but a couple of Trojan three pointers made the difference, allowing Hillsboro a 19-16 lead at the half. The second half started with a 5-0 run for the Trojans, which soon blossomed into a 9-0 that left the Wildcats scrambling to recover. Brooke Holloway managed to power Moundridge to within five with 4:07 left in the fourth quarter, but Hillsboro held on to win 38-32. “I’m just very, very proud of the effort we gave,” Moundridge coach Kenroy Wilson said. “We battled possession after possession and we could have given up a couple of times, being a young team, but there’s just no quit in them.” Hillsboro’s Danae Bina led all scorers with 13 points. Holloway and Michelle Schrag led the Mounridge scoring attack with nine points each. MacKenzie Suderman added eight for the Wildcats. Moundridge next faces Lyons Thursday evening at the Classic, while Hillsboro faces Inman. Moundridge — Huxman 1 0-0 3; Schrag 4 0-0 9; Siemens 1 1-1 3; Holloway 4 1-5 9; Suderman 2 4-6 8.
