The Veteran’s of Foreign War’s chapter in McPherson will host their annual children’s party from 3 to 5 p.m. Dec. 9. The event is open to the public, and is a free event for children up to age 10. Carla Thompson, director for the event, says that the children’s party is the veterans’ way of saying “thank you” to the community for their support. The VFW, she said, provides a lot of organizational support each year. Children who come to the event can expect to see Santa Claus and get their own photo, courtesy of Walgreens. Also at the party will be a karate demonstration, as well as the opportunity for children to write personalized letters to the veterans. Children will also be allowed to step into Santa’s workshop to pick out their own gift. The children will be free to roam around. Parents aren’t allowed to enter the workshop with their child. Thompson shared a story of a six year old boy at the event one year who wanted a white teddy bear. Stepping into the workshop, the boy could only find a number of colored teddy bears, until he spied a white one with black ears out of the corner of his eye. “You’d of thought that boy just found a million dollars,” Thompson said. The children’s party is financed each year by supporting companies in the community, as well as individual donators throughout the community. Thompson wished to express her thanks to everyone who helped financially this year. “It’s the little secret Santas that help out,” she said. The VFW is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays. Monetary donations can be delivered during normal business hours, or a check can be made to Farmer’s Bank, with a note on the check regarding the VFW Children’s Party fund.
