By the end of the last match Thursday night, the crowd at McPherson High School was as breathless as the wrestlers.
In the final match of a dual between MHS and Andale, the Bullpups' Michael McKinney went three full rounds with the Indians' Chris Betzen in the 285 pound weight class, winning a 15-9 decision.
“(McKinney) wrestled really tough,” MHS coach Doug Kretzer said. “He got outscored and got down, but he's a heavyweight in really great shape, so his conditioning came into play in that match for sure.”
The Bullpups took seven of their matches against Andale, all but McKinney's by fall, to win the dual 45-33.
“Our goal coming in was just to wrestle hard,” Kretzer said. “We wrestle hard, things will just take care of themselves.”
Overall, Kretzer was pleased by the efforts of his young team.
“We've got nine out our 14 weights are first year kids who have never been on the varsity mat before,” he said. “I was pretty proud of these new guys.”
The Pups don't have any time to rest, as they will travel to Colby this afternoon for a dual tournament starting at 2 p.m.
