  • MHS wrestlers face tough competition at Colby invite

  • Day two of the Colby Eagle Invitational Saturday was packed with tough competition for a young McPherson High wrestling team, which saw the Bullpups go 1-3 on the day in matches and finish 17th overall.

  • Day two of the Colby Eagle Invitational Saturday was packed with tough competition for a young McPherson High wrestling team, which saw the Bullpups go 1-3 on the day in matches and finish 17th overall.
    McPherson opened the day against Eagle Crest, Co., and fell 66-17. Cole Kretzer and Travis Steenson w each picked up a win by a fall and a technical fall, respectively, while Levi Baldwin won by forfeit.
    Next up was Legend, Co., whom the Bullpups fell to 48-36. Steenson and T.J. Stites each picked up wins by fall during the match.
    In their third match Saturday, MHS defeated St. Francis 43-36, as the Indians entered the match with six open weight classes, giving McPherson a points advantage. Alex Boswell and Todd Graber each won their matches for MHS by decision, Boswell taking a 10-8 overtime win at 126, while Graber won 14-4 at 145.
    The Bullpups squared off with Hoxie as their last opponents on Saturday and fell 50-24. For the tournament, Steenson and Graber each went 5-2, while Kretzer and Ross Regier each finished 4-3. Boswell and Kaleb Jost went 3-4, while Ethan VanDorn and Levi Baldwin finished with 2-5 records.
    “We ran into some really tough competition this weekend at Colby,” MHS coach Doug Kretzer said. “Our young team wrestled hard and got a lot of mat time.”
    Valley Center finished first, followed by host Colby, Pine Creek, Co., Oberlin and Phillipsburg.
    McPherson is next in action Saturday. The JV squad will had to Rose Hill for a tournament, while the varsity team will participate in the Emporia Winter Classic.
