  • The McPherson County Commission discussed the dangers of the curves at 14th and Chisholm Road during a work session Tuesday afternoon.
The curves present some safety concerns. The current structure of the curve places it at an odd angle that, if taken at the wrong speed and angle, could cause a vehicle to wind up in a nearby ditch. In some reported cases, this already has happened.
The board acknowledged the need to fix the alignment of the curves. Also, staff recommended some of the ditches be filled to prevent future damage.
    In other business:
    • Tom Kramer, McPherson County public works director, notified commissioners of building repairs needed to a salt tent and a pole shed. The back wall of the salt tent was blown out by the wind, and a $1,600 replacement is estimated. The pole shed is needing to be rearranged and cleaned in preparation for winter.
    • Kramer notified commissioners of the changes to signage needed for Lindsborg. The changes come due to Kansas Highway 61 road acquisitions.
    • Kramer notified the commissioners of the desire for Williams Co. to pay to have Eighth Avenue paved at Kiowa Road. Eighth would be paved to Willams Co.’s new building on Eighth. The road would be an open public road.
    • Kramer notified commissioners of equipment needs. He recommended a large roller used for chip sealing be replaced with two smaller models. He recommended a semi-tractor and a tandem axle dump truck be replaced with a bigger semi able to support bigger trucks and snowplow capability. He notified the commission the Cat Reclaimer is down with a blown turbo, but will be put back onto Roxbury Road pending repairs.
    • During the commission’s regular meeting, the commission unanimously approved the purchase of a new power broom. The new broom will be one of two models owned by public works for street cleaning purposes.
