  • Mulvane was game for the majority of the first half, but the depth of the McPherson High girls’ bench proved too much for the Mustangs, as the Bullpups pulled out the 51-40 league win.
The first quarter was tight, with both teams exchanging the lead several times before the Wildcats were able to pull away slightly, leading 15-10 at the end of the period.
Mulvane kept the momentum going for the first couple of minutes in the second quarter, but the talent of the Bullpups started to shine through, as junior Abby Pedersen sunk a three pointer that gave MHS the lead for the first time at 18-17, a lead which they did not reliquish the rest of the game. The Pups went into the locker room at the half with a 29-20 lead, helped in part by Pedersen’s 13 points.
Both teams turned up the defensive pressure in the third quarter, as McPherson scored once within the first minute of the quarter and then not again until nearly four minutes later, when Pedersen was able to sink a three pointer and give MHS a 34-25 lead. She would score one more long ball not long after, as MHS took a 41-32 lead into the fourth quarter.
McPherson moves to 2-1 on the season, 1-0 in league play. Mulvane moved to 4-1 (0-1 AVCTL).
“It was important to get win number one, in regard to league play,” Strathman said. “It was a good win on the road.”
Pedersen led all scorers with 19 points, followed by Katelyn Loecker’s 17.
“(Pedersen) played really well,” Strathman said. “She got on track with her three shooting early and just made good decisions.”
McPherson next is in action Friday evening in the Hy-Vee Shootout in Kansas City, Mo., where they will take on Blue Spring, Mo., at around 5 p.m. McPherson — McPherson — Pedersen 7 0-1 19, Barnes 1 3-4 5, Loecker 5 7-9 17, Bate 1 0-0 2, Willems 3 0-0 8.
