The McPherson College men’s basketball program have had some cohesive problems in this early season but after a 71-64 win in an exhibition game against NCAA Division II Rockhurst University, the team may be headed in the right direction.

Scoring was slow in the opening period as neither team made it over the 10-point hump until a Samson Shivers three-ball gave McPherson a 12-5 lead and capped off an 8-0 run by the Bulldogs. Mac had the lead for the final minutes of the half, going into the locker room up 33-27.

McPherson held the lead for the entire second period, getting up by as many as 12 on a number of occasions; the score stayed in the single-digits for the majority of the half. Rockhurst made a push down the stretch but couldn’t break through McPherson’s defense, giving Mac the 71-64 win.

McPherson’s Mason Hewitt got his second-straight start and put in a game-high 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor and 1-of-2 from the charity stripe. Shivers was second on the list with 13. Devirous Johnson entered the game off the bench and scored 12 points, hitting 6-of-12 from the field.

Mac’s next game will be in West Palm Beach, Fla., as they will play in the Chuck Daly Classic hosted by Northwood University. The Bulldogs will take on Emmanuel College in their first game on Dec 29 at 5 p.m.
