  • A late second half run by Missouri Class 5A Liberty North left the McPherson High boys with their first loss on the young season 44-32.
The game was tight for the first half, as both teams’ had to fight through poor shooting and stiff defense for every point, leading to a 7-7 tie after the first quarter.
McPherson trailed late in the second quarter, until a three-pointer from sophomore Kyler Kinnamon hit paydirt, giving the Bullpups a 15-13 advantage heading into the locker room at the half.
The Bullpups had been plagued by poor shooting in the first half, making only 25 percent of their fields goals and only 1-of-6 from the foul line in the first half.
Coming out in the second half, McPherson showed some fire, blitzing the Eagles with the face-paced offense they are more comfortable with and going on a quick 6-0 run.
Liberty North, however, fought back thanks to a pair of three-balls from Nadhir Daughtery to tie it up with 6:30 left in the third period that sparked an 8-0 run for the Eagles and gave them the lead.
MHS would fight back, with Kinnamon scoring a layup to tie the game at 25-25, with the following free throw giving the Pups the lead once more, which they would hold onto entering the fourth quarter.
The score remained 28-27 until the 6:30 mark in the fourth quarter, when Liberty North’s Jake Hanson scored a three-pointer from 19-feet to give the Eagles a 30-28 lead. Liberty would outscore the Pups 17-4 in the frame, the only points coming off a Kyler Kinnamon short jumper and free throws from Marcus Houghton and Keaton Sorenson. Kinnamon led the Bullpups with 12 points, followed by Peter Horton with 11 points.
Daughtery led all scorers with 16 points, the only Eagle to reach double digits.
The Pups finished the game with 25 percent shooting from the field and were 2-of-18 from distance.
McPherson falls to 3-1 on the season and faces a pair of stiff road trips to end the 2012 portion of the season.
