  • It appears even the flu can only moderately slow down McPherson High's Katelyn Loecker.
The star forward put up 13 points in MHS' 55-29 league win over Buhler Tuesday, despite limited minutes due to the illness, which visibly left her playing a step or two slower than normal.
Her teammates stepped up huge for the Bullpups, however, as MHS exploded for an 16-2 run late in the first quarter, holding an 18-4 advantage after the first quarter. “Going in our kids knew (Loecker) was struggling and didn't know how she was going to be,” McPherson coach Chris Strathman said. “Everybody's focus was there tonight, both offensively and defensively.”
The Pups kept up the pressure throughout the rest of the half, taking a 31-17 advantage into the locker room at the half. Loecker would come out in the third quarter and kick off an 8-0 run for McPherson, who would also hold the Crusaders to only eight points in the frame.
The offense was sparked by junior Abby Pedersen, who took the scoring burden on her shoulders, pouring in 20 points total in the ballgame for McPherson.
“She bounced back from Friday night, where she struggled shooting against Blue Springs,” Strathman said. “She shot the ball well and really attacked it off the bounce, as well.
When she does that, she's difficult to guard.”
Hailey Ruder and Janae Barnes would each add nine for the Pups.
Buhler was led in scoring by senior Josie Williams, who had 14 points.
Strathman said Tuesday's win was important for the Pups following Friday's 39-26 loss to Blue Springs at the HyVee Shootout.
“Even though we knew we played really good defense against Blue Springs,” Strathman said, “your confidence can be a little shaken, obviously from a loss, but also from struggling so much offensively. Our kids got it going tonight and it was fun to see.”
The JV squad also defeated Buhler, as the Bullpups rolled to a 63-25 win. Cassidy Wedel led the Pups with 13 points, followed by freshman Paige Schmidt with 11. Bri Cooks added seven for McPherson High.
    McPherson (3-2) has a quick turnaround, as they wrap up the 2012 portion of the schedule tomorrow against Hutchinson. Tip off from the Salt Hawk Activity Center is at 6 p.m. McPherson — Ruder 2 4-4 9; Willems 1 0-0 2; Pedersen 7 4-6 20; Wedel 1 0-0 2; Barnes 3 3-4 9; Loecker 3 6-6 13.
    Buhler — Steffen 0 1-2 1; Dick 1 0-0 2; Keller 1 1-2 3; Williams 6 2-4 14; Torgerson 4 0-0 9.
