  • The McPherson County Planning Board approved a special-use permit for American Tower Corporation for the construction of a 345-foot Telecommunications tower during the board’s meeting on Monday night.
The planned site for the tower is south of Kansas Highway 4, west of Sixth Avenue.
The cell tower at one point was planned to be built near runway eight of the McPherson Airport, but the plan was denied by the McPherson City Commission due to safety concerns. Airport officials expressed concerns that planes making emergency landings would have no where to turn if the tower was erected at that site.
American Tower initially expressed concerns placing the tower elsewhere would hurt cell reception in south McPherson.
American Tower coordinated with the McPherson Airport and planning and zoning to establish this new site as a workable location.
The permit awaits the McPherson County Commission’s approval before construction can begin.
