  • Ferrell takes lead of business dept.

  • Central Christian College Vice President for Finance and Operations, Dave Ferrell, Ed.D., will assume a new role and set of responsibilities at Central with the start of the spring 2013 semester.
    Ferrell has been named chairman of the college’s business department, taking over from interim chairman Heath Whitehouse, who will remain as a full-time faculty member. Ferrell moves into his new role with several goals, including the growth of the department and the development of a masters-level business program.
    “The long-term goal is to start our own MBA program,” Ferrell said. “That is one of the reasons (President) Hal (Hoxie) and (Provost) Lenny (Favara) encouraged me to make the move.”
    Immediate goals for Ferrell and the department include building enrollment through more active student recruitment, promotion of scholarship opportunities and finding real-world learning opportunities for students. Ferrell said he has already started exploring partnerships that would allow students to learn business skills while interacting with business leaders and philanthropic organizations.
    The department currently offers four distinct majors: accounting, management, organizational leadership and small business management.
    The creation of a new degree program is not new to Ferrell, who previously served as the business department chairman and took the lead in writing the curriculum for the department’s expansion from a two-year degree to a four-year degree program in the late 1990s. When implemented, the MBA program will be the first masters-level program for Central.
    The addition of a new degree program, Ferrell said, would likely start with a few masters-level business courses before opening a complete degree program.
    Everything is still in the planning stages but Ferrell said he’s “excited about the opportunities.”
    Through the spring semester, Ferrell will retain his operational administrative duties, which includes oversight of the physical plant, food service, technology and other college property.
    His finance duties will be taken over, in part, by Phil Nelson, who was recently named the college’s business manager.
    Ferrell will make a complete transition to department chairman at the end of the 2013 spring semester.
