The Dec. 1 inventory of hogs and pigs on Kansas farms totaled 1.91 million head, up 1 percent from Dec. 1, 2011, and Sept. 1, 2012.
Hogs and pigs kept for breeding purposes totaled 170,000 head, unchanged from December 2011 and Sept. 1, 2012. Breeding stock accounted for 9 percent of all hogs and pigs. Market hogs, at 1.74 million head, accounted for the remaining inventory. Market hog inventory was up 1 percent from a year ago and Sept. 1, 2012. Market hogs weighing less than 50 pounds totaled 510,000 head, unchanged from a year ago. The 50-119 pound weight group, at 410,000 head, was up 17 percent from a year ago. The 120-179 pound weight group totaled 290,000 head, unchanged from a year ago. The 180 pound and over weight group, at 530,000 head, was down 7 percent from a year ago.
