  • McPherson city and county commissioners met with representatives of the district on Monday to discuss topics at the local and state level.
City and county officials listed some concerns that run parallel with bills and issues being discussed in the Kansas Legislature. One such issue included the potential of a long-term budget plan for the state.
The city of McPherson runs on a three-year budget, with the state adjusting its budget annually. Mayor Tom Brown expressed his desire to see the state focus on a longer term plan for its budget.
Representative Don Schroeder echoed the statement.
“It upsets me that we in government don’t focus on a long-term plan,” Schroeder said.
City Administrator Nick Gregory also mentioned the city’s current projects in housing, and encouraged legislatures to help the growth of housing incentives.
The city is working on the construction of the Barnstormer’s West Field addition, located just south of the McPherson city cemetery, which will provide eight residential homes.
Gregory said the city of McPherson is seeing larger numbers of people hired for jobs who live outside the county. By providing housing and incentives, Gregory said, the amount of industry within the city would grow.
The representatives thanked the city and county officials for their input, and encouraged continued communication between their offices.
