  • The McPherson College men started out 2013 the way they finished 2012; still in search of their first win in the KCAC, as they fell to the University of Saint Mary 87-73 Thursday night.
The Bulldogs were dominated in the first half, watching helplessly as the Spires ripped off a 14-4 run to open up the ballgame. Nothing seemed to fall in for McPherson College, as they only managed 15 points on 20.7 percent field goal shooting in the first half, while Saint Mary shot 40.7 percent and had a 30-15 lead at the half.
McPherson made some offensive adjustments in the second half, though, taking the fight to the Spires and fighting to within single digits on a couple of occasions. However, the athleticism of Saint Mary shown through time and again, and the Spires held on for an 87-73 win.
“I thought, in the first half, we played so much harder defensively,” McPherson coach Tim Swartzendruber said. “In the second half, I was so disappointed we could not stop (Chip Schneider) on the dribble. They’d throw it time and time into the lane, and he would kick it back out to open shooters. Schneider just killed us.”
Schneider led all scorers with 23 points, followed by McPherson’s Adam Bruner with 19. Only one other Bulldog reached double digits was Samson Shivers, who came in off the bench in the second half for 10.
Shiron Williams had 14 and Matt Heydman added 12 points for the Spires (10-5, 4-0 KCAC). McPherson (6-9, 0-4 KCAC) is at home once more on Saturday, as they host Friends, who fell to Sterling Thursday 87-75. Tip off is at 7 p.m.
