  • The McPherson High swim team finished seventh at Thursday’s Newton Invitational, but qualified a relay team and an individual for the state swim meet in the process.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Zane Richter, Ryen Trost, Kyler Jost and Derick Goodson qualified for the February state meet with a time of 1:41.29 Thursday.
Additionally, Goodson also qualified for the 200 freestyle as an individual, also with a time of 1:41.29, less than a second off a team record. He also qualified in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.07, breaking a team record held previously by Caleb Warren.
“All in all, the boys swam 12 best times,” coach Bonnie Sue Fisher said. “I’m very pleased at how well they came back from the Christmas break and how hard they’ve been working.” Maize won the invitational with 375 points, followed by Derby, Newton, Maize South and Hutchinson. Rose Hill finished sixth, ahead of McPherson.
