  • A 26-4 first quarter set the tone for the McPherson High girls, who played in front of a home crowd for the first time in a month and only the second time this season, as they defeated the Winfield Vikings 68-25 Friday night. “We knew (the Bullpups) were going to be ready to go,” MHS coach Chris Strathman said of the holiday layoff. “They were very eager to get back out on the floor.” And it showed, as the Pups held Winfield to only nine first-half points, taking a commanding 40-9 lead into halftime. Setting the tone in the first half was Hailey Ruder, who went 4-5 from behind the three point arc for 12 points in the opening two periods. Abby Pedersen added 13, including three from distance. McPherson kept up the onslaught through the third quarter, where they outscored a completely overwhelmed Viking squad 18-3. Winfield managed to score 13 points in the fourth quarter to break the 20 point margin. McPherson’s Katelyn Loecker picked up 20 points and 15 rebounds. Ruder finished with 16 points on the game, while Pedersen had 13. Abby Bertholf led Winfield’s scoring with nine points.
