Local youth recently attended a 4-H poultry project field trip. The field trip involved those interested in learning more about poultry from both McPherson County and also Harvey County.
About 16 youth and eight adults toured Frank Reese Jr.’s Good Shepherd Turkey Ranch near Lindsborg.
Frank Reese Jr. is the owner of the Good Shepherd Turkey Ranch. He is considered to be one of the most knowledgeable producers of heritage turkeys and chickens and very willingly shared his knowledge with the youth and adults.
4-H was a part of Reese's life growing up, as he joined the program early, and he began keeping his own turkeys at about age 5, winning his first Kansas State Turkey Championship in 1955 and his first National Turkey Championship in 1974.
He is very passionate about preserving the heritage breeds and shared his passion with the youth.
He encouraged them to take the time to learn the standard of perfections for whatever breed of poultry they were most interested in and then to research breeders that sold animals that stayed true to those standards.
