  • Barbara and Roger Messenger of Moundridge have invested in Silver for the New Year. They recently adopted Silver n Satin, a Missouri Fox Trotter mare who was waiting for them at Rainbow Meadows Equine Rescue and Retirement Inc. in southeast Kansas.
Silver originally came to Rainbow Meadows when her owner was transferred to Europe and was unsuccessful in attempts to rehome the mare. Silver’s owner knew sending the mare to an auction opened up the possibility of slaughter or irresponsible owners, so she contacted Rainbow Meadows for help. Silver was quickly adopted out to a loving home, but health issues forced her adopters to return her to Rainbow Meadows in 2012.
Luckily for her, she was soon wanted by another loving adopter.
Silver is calm, responsive, fully saddle-trained, and gaits well.
To date, Rainbow Meadows has rescued almost 160 horses and has found homes for more than 140.
“Our success in providing safe refuge for horses in need is due to the selfless acts of love, which are provided by adopters, fosters, volunteers and donors,” said Karen Everhart, Rainbow Meadows’ executive director.
“Without their support, the pain and suffering of the horses would continue as Rainbow Meadows could not exist. The horses we rescue still have so much to give as companions, riding partners and even as pets.”
Dedicated to the rescue of abused, neglected and unwanted horses, Rainbow Meadows is an IRS-designated 501(c)(3) public charity in Sedan.
It currently houses more than 30 rescues, all of which are available for adoption through a process designed to ensure that the horse goes to a safe and caring “forever” home.
Rainbow Meadows also actively works to educate current and potential horse owners on how to provide quality care for their horses.
