  • Another two records have been broken by McPherson High standout swimmer Derick Goodson, including one of his own.
Goodson broke his own record in the 50-yard freestyle and chased down an elusive record in the 100-yard backstroke during Thursday’s invitational hosted by Salina South.
Goodson took first in the 50 free with a time of 22.66 seconds and first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.53.
Goodson currently has five separate team records, with the possibility of breaking one more in the 200-yard individual medley on Jan. 22, as the team will travel to Great Bend in it’s final meet of the season.
“Although so much of the season has been about celebrating these records,” MHS coach Bonnie Sue Fisher said, “it has also been about celebrating countless best times, new state qualifying times and even state consideration times.”
With such a young team coming into this season, no one was quite sure what to expect, but Fisher’s Bullpups have proven more than up to the challenge.
Kyler Jost, who just two days previously competed in the 100-yard butterfly for the first time, knocked four seconds off his previous time to qualify for the state meet in February with a time of 1:00.82.
Zane Richter dropped an additional six seconds in his 200-yard individual medley time Thursday at Salina and Fisher said he is within two seconds of making the state qualifying time in that race.
Fisher is proud of all her swimmers, citing they have a number of options to swim relays.
“As we move toward the end of the season,” Fisher said, “it is all about giving as many boys the opportunity to swim proudly for their school and to know all their hard work throughout the year has paid off.”
The Great Bend Invitational will be held on Jan. 22 to wrap up the regular season, with the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League meet on Feb. 9.
The state meet will be held starting Feb. 15.
