  • The York Panthers surged late, but the Central Christian College men held on for an 85-83 MCAC win Tuesday night at the Ed Pyle Sports Complex.
Both teams started hot, trading off three pointers, with York taking an early 9-6 lead, but three quick fouls on York’s Heyvis Jackson turned the tide in the Tigers’ favor. Central outpaced the Panthers the rest of the half to take a 45-37 lead into halftime.
The Tigers held steady throughout most of the second half, but York made the push down the stretch, coming back from as much as seven down. A last-second shot by Desmond Strickland was off, though, preserving the 85-83 win.
“It was a good team win tonight,” Central coach Tony Romero said. “York is a very good ball that could easily win the conference championship.”
Chris Jones had his seventh double double of the season with 25 points and 11 boards. Aaron Cannon also picked up a double double for the Tigers with 10 points and 15 rebounds on the night.
Mike Lyons had a season high 22 points and six assists, while  Kaelon Gary added 11 points.
While pleased with the team effort, Romero did feel the Tigers made the game more difficult than they needed to.
“Definitely not the way we want to finish a game,” he said. “Poor free throw shooting continues to haunt us and there were too many defensive lapses down the stretch. We must continue to get better; in conference play, there is just so little margin for error.”
Central (13-3, 2-1 MCAC) have a pair of road games coming up this weekend. They face Waldorf College Friday at 7:30 p.m., then turn around and face Bellevue University Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
