  • Rick Tuxhorn, president of the McPherson County Food Bank board of directors, used the occasion of the organization’s annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner to announce that the ongoing capital campaign for its facility expansion is on track.
“As of Jan. 7, we have met the original campaign goal with $200,000 gifts and pledges,” Tuxhorn told those gathered for the appreciation event held at Trinity Lutheran Church in McPherson on Jan. 12.
“To date, the total for gifts given and pledged is $241,481. All gifts and pledges above our original goal will allow us to not only complete the planned expansion, but will allow us to look at additional items like paving the parking lot and establishing an endowment for the ongoing maintenance and future improvements of the Food Bank.
“The expansion, when completed, will allow our volunteers to more efficiently receive and distribute food to those in need of support in McPherson County, so this is exciting for each of our clients and volunteers.
“Reaching the initial goal this quickly shows the generosity of many citizens, businesses, and organizations of McPherson County and the realization that the food bank fulfills an important need within our area of the state.  We want to thank our campaign leadership team and especially our co-chairs, Pat Bruce, Dale Ladd and Dr. Ted Kessinger, for their efforts along with those of every campaign volunteer who solicited gifts.”
The date for the formal ground breaking of the expansion project is anticipated for early 2013 and will be announced at a later date.
The McPherson County Food Bank is a completely voluntary organization with no paid leadership.  The Food Bank was officially organized in 1983 and was first based out of the “Little Red School” building which was located at the corner of Elm and Earl Streets. In 1986, John Peterson donated the building at 707 S. Main St. in McPherson from which the food bank continues to function.
