Eugene "Gene" Louis Beck Jr., 70, of Zolfo Springs, Fla., passed away on Jan. 19, 2013, in Lakeland, Fla.
Gene was born on Sept. 27, 1942 , in Savannah, Ga., and had been a resident of Hardee County, Fla. most of his life.
He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Wauchula. Gene had been employed as a firefighter and EMT with Hardee County, was a former deputy with the Hardee County Sheriff Department, and served in the U.S. Army. He was a Girl Scout troop leader and supporter, swimming instructor at the Bowling Green community pool, and helped coordinate the Finkle reunions in Galva.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ella Mae Culp Finkle and Charles Finkle, mother, Marie Beck, and step-mother, Connie Barringer Beck.
Survivors include his father, Eugene Beck Sr. of Lake Butler, Fla; two step-brothers, Jackie Barringer and wife Pam of Wauchula, Fla., and Clyde "Nubbin" Barringer and wife Louella of Lake Butler, Fla; three step-sisters, Emily Thomas and husband Dinky of Lake Butler, Fla., Linda Ross and husband Wayne of Lake Butler, Fla., and Gayle Barringer of Worthington Springs, Fla.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25 at New Hope Baptist Church. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church with Rev. Chris Bishop officiating.
