The McPherson High boys swim team wrapped up the regular season Tuesday at the Hays Invitational and did so on a strong note.
MHS senior Derick Goodson added to his already impressive resume heading into the AVCTL meet on Feb. 9 with first place finishes in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breast stroke. His time of 1:09.60 in the 100 breast was a new state qualifying time.
“It’s not a normal race for him, but it completed his goal of swimming state qualifying times in all eight of the of the individual races that are swam at the state meet,” MHS coach Bonnie Sue Fisher said.
Due to entry limits for the state meet, however, Goodson will be limited to only two individual races and two relays.
The 200-yard free style relay team of Goodson, Kyler Jost, Ryen Trost and Zane Richter also finished first at the meet with a time of 1:40.23.
In all, the Bullpups recorded seven personal best times during the meet.
“I thought the boys did a great job at our meet,” Fisher said. “It was a meet that we were not really expecting very many good swims because they are the most tired part of the season. The next two weeks of rest and focus assure me that we will achieve 100 percent best times at the AVCTL meet in El Dorado.”
The Class 5-1A state meet will be held on Feb. 14-16 in Topeka.
