  • The McPherson USD 418 Board of Education Monday approved the wording in legal documents that will appear in its $13.25 million bond election.
This vote will allow the proper timeline for an April 2 vote.
Following this board approval, the district will begin to educate the community on the project. Public meetings are likely to be conducted in February and March, and information will be put online as soon as possible. The wording also will be placed in a legal document in The Sentinel at a future date.
“It’s an exciting time for the community,” Superintendent Randy Watson said. “The board has done a really good job of working on the needs rather than the wants. I’m really happy and looking forward to a chance to explain it with the public and get their opinion.”
At McPherson High School, a shop area will be added and science classes would be repaired and upgraded. At Lincoln and Roosevelt Elementary schools, additions will be made for classrooms, a cafeteria, a commons area and a kitchen. At Washington Elementary School, an old addition will be demolished and replaced with classrooms, in addition to other projects.
Several roofing projects also would be pursued in the bond issue.
The new bond would result in a lower bond and interest mill levy, dipping from the current amount of 6.497 mills to 5.5 mills.
The board also approved the job description of a construction project manager that would assist with the bond issue, if found and hired.

    • In other news, the board also approved the extension of Superintendent Randy Watson’s contract through 2016.
