  • Frances J. Sundquist, a former longtime resident of McPherson, passed away Jan. 17 in Los Angeles, where she had been a resident of Solheim Lutheran Home since 2003. This past October she celebrated her 100th birthday.
Born Frances Josephine Halene on Oct. 25, 1912, in Kansas City, she moved to McPherson in 1915 with her parents, both immigrants from Sweden, and her sister, Evelyn. She was a graduate of McPherson High School and married Laurence A. Sundquist, also of McPherson, in 1937.  During World War II, while Laurence served with the U.S. Army in Europe, she worked for the Coleman Company in Wichita. Upon returning to McPherson after the war, she was a homemaker and, in later life, worked in the McPherson public schools for 16 years. In her early adult years, she was a Girl Scout leader, and throughout her life she was a gardener, an avid bridge player, and an active and longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in McPherson.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, and Laurence, her husband of 59 years, who passed away in 1997. She is survived by a son, Eric Sundquist, of Batesville, Va.; three grandchildren, Alexandra Charpentier, Joanna Gorin, and Ariane Gorin; eight great-grandchildren; a niece, Linnea Frew Wilmoth, of Allen, Texas; two grandnieces, Julie White and Lisa Wiedemer; and their children. Family members will have a private memorial at a later date. Memorial gifts may be sent to the First United Methodist Church in McPherson.
