  • For more than two centuries, young men and women have applied for entrance into the highly regarded United States Military Academies. The process is rigorous, and requires an applicant have a history of personal discipline and a commitment to his or her school and community. Members of Congress have the distinct privilege of nominating outstanding young men and women to attend the nation’s military academies. Congressman Huelskamp recruited a board of Kansans to review applicants with the board providing recommendations to Huelskamp.
On Thursday, Huelskamp announced he had nominated 18 individuals from the state. Two were from McPherson County, including: Nicholas Deterding of Lindsborg, son of Todd and Christine Deterding, nominated to the United States Naval Academy; and Grant Garst of Inman, son of Billy and Tamara Garst, nominated to the United States Air Force Academy.
“I am honored to nominate these distinguished men and women to attend our nation’s military academies,” Huelskamp said of the 18 individuals. “Each has shown a tremendous dedication to his or her school work and extracurricular activities, as well as to their communities. These young men and women have bright futures ahead of them, and I have no doubt that they will serve our country well.”
