  • Harlem Quartet to play the McPherson Opera House

  • The Harlem Quartet; what are they? That’s a good question as the four members, Ilmar Gavilan, violin; Melissa White, violin; Jaime Amador, viola; and Matthew Zalkind, cello, are equally at home in the worlds of both classical and jazz music.

  • The Harlem Quartet; what are they? That’s a good question as the four members, Ilmar Gavilan, violin; Melissa White, violin; Jaime Amador, viola; and Matthew Zalkind, cello, are equally at home in the worlds of both classical and jazz music.
The Quartet recently performed at the Orpheum Theatre in Wichita along with jazz giants Chick Corea on piano and Gary Burton on vibraphone. The McPherson Opera House performance will showcase their talents in both areas: before the intermission, Haydn: Op. 76 No. 2 and Beethoven: Op.18 No. 6, and after the intermission, Chick Corea: The Adventures of Hippocrates; and Marsalis: At the Octoroon Balls.
The Quartet made its public debut in 2006 at Carnegie Hall in New York City with the mission “to advance diversity in classical music, engaging young and new audiences through the discovery and presentation of varied repertoire that includes works by minority composers.”
“I saw the Harlem Quartet-Chick Corea-Gary Burton concert in Wichita,” John Holecek, Opera House executive director, said. “I heard a lot of buzz about people wanting to see the Quartet solo—and for good reason. It’s not just their exemplary technical skills, it’s the fire and passion they bring to the music whatever it may be. For those of you who think serious music is stuffy, I guarantee you’ll change your mind when you see the Quartet live.”
The Harlem Quartet is performing at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 at the McPherson Opera House. Tickets and information at mcphersonoperahouse.org.
