  • Two McPherson youth won their age brackets at the state finals of the Elks Hoop Shoot Saturday in Wichita.
Hayes Schmid hit 24 of 25 free throws to win the 10-11 age division. He also had the honor of being the top shooter overall in the boys division.
Taylor Robertson also hit 24 of 25 free throws, staking her claim to the 12-13 age division first place trophy. Robertson, also, was the top shooter in the girls section of the competition.
Both will now travel to Denver to compete in the Regional Elks Hoop Shoot finals against other state winners from Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska. That competition will be held on March 9.
If successful there, Schmid and Robertson will compete in the national finals.
The Hoop Shoot National Finals are held annually in Springfield, Mass., home of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Finalists compete on the campus of Western New England University.
In the end, one boy and one girl from each age-group will win a national title and will have their names permanently inscribed at the Basketball Hall of Fame.
This year’s National Finals contest will take place April 18-20.
