  • Nick Vontz was on the way to a job site this afternoon when he saw smoke coming from a house at 551 S. Oak St.
Vontz of McPherson alerted the fire department and then broke the back door of the house down.
He took a fire extinguisher from someone nearby and attempted to extinguish flames in the living room.
"I don't know what caused it," he said. "All I could see was the flames."
The McPherson Fire Department arrived a short time later, entered the house and quickly extinguished the fire.
McPherson Fire Chief Jeff Deal said firefighters conducted a primary and secondary search of the scene upon entry to the house but found no one home.
Vontz said he entered the house because he didn't know if anyone was home.
Several other passersby also said they tried to enter the home, fearing the elderly resident of the house might be trapped inside.
No one was injured in the fire.
"I guess I was trying to be hero," Vontz said.
Deal said he could not confirm Vontz had been inside the house prior to the firefighters arrival.
The resident of the home could not be immediately found at the time of the fire, and Deal said the family believed she had been out running errands when the fire broke out.
Deal said the fire was contained to the living room of the house, but there was smoke and heat damage throughout the structure. Deal said when he spoke to the Sentinel on scene the cause of the fire was unknown. There are no estimates on damages at this point.
