  • For McPherson High’s Hailey Ruder, the question of where to go to college was answered in middle school, though only became official Thursday afternoon as she signed her letter of intent to play soccer for Washburn University.
Ruder knew she wanted to be an Ichabod after watching former MHS standout Lauren Schwindt, who has served as a source of inspiration for Ruder, play there.
“I had gone up to Washburn when I was little and played there,” Ruder said. “(Schwindt) told me how much she loved it; loved the campus, loved the coaches, loved the classes.”
The decision then set as to where her collegiate career was going to play out, Ruder aimed to be the best she could be in order to follow in Schwindt’s footsteps.
She has played for the Topeka Prodigy Extreme, a club team based out of Topeka, and has attended the Washburn soccer camp since eighth grade.
Ruder has also more than proved her worth on the soccer field for the Bullpups in her four years as a starter. She was a part of the 2010 and 2011 MHS AVCTL championship teams, earning all-league first team honors as a defender her freshman year and a foward her sophomore and junior seasons.
Additionally, she has been both a first- and second-team selection for the All-Central region teams and was given an All-State second-team nod as a forward her junior year.
Ruder plans major in athletic training and physical therapy assistant.
