  • The Bullpup wrestling team honored its four seniors Thursday night at McPherson High School during a dual with Class 4A No. 5 El Dorado.
For MHS head coach Doug Kretzer, the night was especially poignant, as his son, Kaden, was among the honorees.
“It’s been a long ride for me and Kaden,” Kretzer said. “He was two years old the first time he ever put on headgear and stepped onto a mat. That was in the middle of a match. I guess he couldn’t wait to get out there.”
Kretzer was just as proud of the other seniors, Alex Boswell, Ethan Fowler and Travis Steenson. All but Steenson were able to wrestle one last time in front of a home crowd, as El Dorado didn’t have a competitor at 182 for Steenson to wrestle.
“We would have liked to have gotten Travis on the mat tonight so he could showcase his skills in front the crowd,” Kretzer said. “I was really proud of how the three that got a match wrestled.”
Kaden Kretzer picked up the first McPherson win of the night at 120 pounds, scoring at technical fall after getting up 16-0 on El Dorado’s Daniel Thomas.
Fowler also chalked up a win for the Bullpups, taking a 6-1 decision at 138 pounds over Cole Reinhardt. T.J. Stites won by fall at the 1:43 mark of his match at 145 against Greg Mathewes.
Overall, El Dorado won the dual 50-20, but Kretzer was still pleased with his team’s effort, despite the loss, noting his Pups are wrestling the best they have yet this season.
“This is exactly what we want to see,” he said. “We talked at the beginning of the year of just trying to reach our potential and, right now, I think it’s night and day from where we were in the first competitions of the year.”
The dual was the last league meet for the Bullpups before regionals start on Feb. 15 at Abilene High School.
The JV has one last invitational this weekend, as they will travel to Remington High School on Saturday.
