Walter Lee Hanna Jr., 87, of McPherson, died at 11:47 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013 at McPherson Hospital in McPherson, Kan.
Walt was born on July 3, 1925, in Winona, Mo., a son of the late Mary (Finley) and Walter Lee Hanna Sr.
He was a member of First Christian Church McPherson. He had been attending St. Joseph Catholic Church in McPherson.
Walt served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee in World War II.
He was employed as the plant superintendent at McPherson Custom Products Inc., in McPherson. Prior to that, Walt owned and operated Walt's Millwright Service, maintaining and repairing grain elevators throughout the Midwest.
Walt was a former member of a Masonic Lodge in Wichita; lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2715, member of American Legion Post No 24, and former member of Elk's Lodge No. 502, all of McPherson.
Walter was united in marriage to Rose Ilene Hanna on June 8, 1946, in McPherson. Ilene died on July 2, 1980. Walter was united in marriage to Ida Mae Gerber Schoenecker on March 9, 1992, in McPherson.
He is survived by his wife, Ida Mae, and children: three daughters, Linda J. (Tom) Howe, of Andover, Kaye (Randy) Ellis, of McPherson, and Judy (Michael) Peschel, of Lakeville, Conn.; two sons, Randal E. (Connie) Hanna, of Moundridge, and David Lee (Bridget) Hanna, of Kansas City, Kan.; Step Son Michael (Andrea) Schoenecker, of Phoenix; six step daughters, Beverly (Dennis) Burch, of Canton; Sandy (Jay) Krehbiel, of Galva, Kansas, Linda (Tommy) Nutt, of Tomball, Texas, Christy (Brian) Crowther, of McPherson, Connie Jo (Harold) Krug, of McPherson, Kan., Mary Kay (Brad) Johnson, of Galva, Kan.; step-daughter-in-law Peggy Schoenecker, of Moundridge; 31 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.
He is additionally survived by a sister, Vivian Cyphers, of the state of Washington.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ilene; a grandson, Troy Eugene Lamb; and two stepsons, Sam and Bob Schoenecker.
He was additionally preceded in death by: one sister, Lillian Nelson; two step sisters, Sylvia Albright; and Vivian Johnson.
Visitation will be on from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at Glidden-Ediger Chapel, McPherson. Rosary will follow at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, McPherson, at with Bishop Eugene Gerber and Father Hin Nguyen officiating.
Burial will follow in McPherson Cemetery, McPherson.
