  • The McPherson boys are a step closer to claiming the AVCTL Div. III title after Tuesday night’s 65-48 win over Mulvane, as the Bullpups are undefeated in division play.
“It was a good win for us,” MHS coach Kurt Kinnamon said. “(Mulvane) was a team everybody had picked to win our league at the beginning of the year. I thought we did a nice job of just staying the course.”
The first quarter started out a little rough for both teams, though the Wildcats led for the majority of the period until Marcus Houghton hit a quick five points to tie the ball game with 2:02 left.
Ryan Horton buried a three from the corner to give McPherson their first lead of the game just thirty seconds later to cap a 14-2 run, as MHS led 14-11 after the first period.
McPherson would try to extend their lead, but Mulvane fought back to within three points with two minutes left in the half. Kyler Kinnamon launched a three that would push the lead back out to six. The two teams trading baskets until the half, where the Pups had a 30-23 lead.
McPherson came back out in the third with a renewed aggression, outscoring the Wildcats 20-8 in the frame and building up a 19 point lead heading into the fourth.
The Bullpups pushed their lead out to 21 points early in the final quarter, but Mulvane would take advantage of MHS senior Keaton Sorenson fouling out of the game at the 5:37 mark to go on an 11-2 run. It wasn’t enough to make up the deficit, however, and the buzzer sounded with a 17 point McPherson win.
The Bullpups (15-2, 7-0 AVCTL Div. III) finished shooting 22-of-44 from the field, hitting 16-of-22 from the foul line and 5-of-14 from three-point range. They only committed nine turnovers in the win, but were out-rebounded 28-34.
“I told Peter (Horton) and Ryan (Horton), with their length, they’ve got to do a better job on the glass for us,” Kurt Kinnamon said. “And they will.”
Kyler Kinnamon led all scorers with 16 points. Marcus Houghton added 13, Alex Bahr had 12 and Ryan Horton finished with 11 points.
In the JV game, MHS won 62-48. Avery Gabel led the way with 23 points, while Drew Pyle and Keshawn Sewell each had 10.
In the freshmen game, McPherson was a 53-41 winner. Marcus McDaniel had 22 points and Brady Scheidegger added 12.
The freshmen also defeated Campus 63-45 Monday night at the Hutchinson Freshmen Invitational. Pyle and Kolby Reed each had nine. The Pups will face Wichita Collegiate Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m.
Next up for the varsity, though, is an AVCTL Div. III showdown with Buhler, who edged out El Dorado 52-50 in overtime Tuesday night.
