  • With three games left in the regular season after Tuesday night’s 60-43 dismantling of Mulvane, the McPherson High girls are in control of their own destiny.
McPherson (14-3, 7-0 AVCTL Div. III) had a slow start to begin the game, but an 8-0 run around the 2:30 mark of the first quarter gave the Bullpups an 19-10 advantage at the buzzer.
The Pups wouldn’t relinquish that lead for the rest of the game, though the Wildcats would rip off an 11-0 in the final four minutes of the half, getting to within three at 24-21. McPherson’s Katelyn Loecker led the Pups to an 8-2 run in response that gave them a 32-23 lead heading into halftime. Loecker went into the locker room already possessing a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Coming out of the locker room, MHS kept pouring it on Mulvane, ripping off a 13-2 run in the third quarter that firmly put the game out of the hands of the Wildcats (12-5, 4-3).
McPherson finished shooting 18-of-45 from the floor, hitting 20-of-29 from the foul line and only 4-of-16 from three-point distance, picking up threes from Hailey Ruder, Hannah Willems and Abby Pedersen.
Pedersen was kept especially quiet from distance, hitting only 1-of-4, but still managed to snag 15 points.
“Abby really did a nice job of staying under control and playing within herself when they were denying her,” MHS coach Chris Strathman said. “She just played what the defense gave her.”
Loecker finished with 20 points and 16 rebounds to lead all scorers. Ruder finished with nine points despite battling illness.
Mulvane was led by Destynee Donaldson, who had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
In the JV game, McPherson won 39-20. Bri Cooks led the Pups with 14 points.
The freshmen blasted the Wildcats 65-19. The Pups were led by Ally Ulsaker’s 22 points, followed by Paige Schmidt with 21 and Magan Alexander with 14.
Next up for McPherson is a home contest against Buhler Friday. The Crusaders defeated El Dorado 56-32 Tuesday night.
“It’s going to be a touch match up for us,” Strathman said. “A win will go a long ways towards deciding the league championship.”
