  • McPherson High senior swimmer Derick Goodson’s dreams of gold are still alive after day one of the Class 5-1A State Swimming Meet at Topeka’s Hummer Park Friday.
Goodson finished third in the 200-yard freestyle prelims and second in the 100 freestyle, breaking personal records in both events in the process.
Goodson will be busy today in the final rounds, as he will also be swimming in the consolation finals of the 200-yard freestyle relay, alongside Ryen Trost, Kyler Jost and Zane Richer. The quartet finished 12th in the qualifying rounds to make the cut.
Additionally, Richter and Jost are also still alive in the meet, having dropped time in their 100-yard butterfly races and qualifying in the consolation finals of that race.
“The boys swam amazingly well today,” MHS coach Bonnie Sue Fisher said. “We have a total of five races (Saturday), which is exciting.”
