The site was no different on Feb. 2, except amongst the purple was a sea of green. Filling nearly three seating sections were 4-H’ers from across the state of Kansas.
This was the fifth annual 4-H Day with the Lady Cats with 1,744 tickets being sold to the game. These ticket sales included 4-H’ers from 68 of Kansas’ 105 counties, coming from as far away as Hugoton, more than a 300 mile drive! Luckily the 36 participants from McPherson County didn’t have quite that long of trip!
Each attendee to the event received a game ticket, T-shirt and voucher for a hot dog and drink at the game. Although the cheers from these 4-H’ers couldn’t quite capture a win for the Wildcats, each person seemed to have a great time during the double over-time match-up against the University of Kansas.
This event has almost doubled in size in the past five years, showing how important fun is in the 4-H experience. It is a great opportunity for families or clubs to get together and simply have a good time. It also exposes the youth to Kansas State University, getting them on campus to where they may later experience other 4-H events or consider higher education.
Plans already are under way to make the 2014 event even better, so look for that information by the end of the year.
Lindsey Friesen is a McPherson County Extension agent for 4-H youth development.
